In the heart of Rhodes Old Town lies the Street of the Knights, where medieval walls still whisper stories of battles and brotherhood. Once the stronghold of the Knights Hospitaller, it now welcomes travelers from around the world.
Known locally as Odos Ippoton, this is one of the most well-preserved and striking medieval streets in Europe, playing a central role in the historical heart of Rhodes Town.
Rhodes has beauty, Rhodes has history, Rhodes has charm, it has everything!

Historical Overview

The street was constructed in the 14th century by the Knights Hospitaller (Knights of St. John), a Christian military and medical order that governed Rhodes between 1309 and 1522.
It served not just as a residential area for the knights but was also the political and military hub of the Order’s activities in Rhodes.
Architectural Features

The Street of the Knights runs approximately 600 meters, stretching from the Hospital of the Knights (currently the Archaeological Museum) to the Palace of the Grand Master at its summit.
The street is paved with cobblestones and lined with imposing medieval buildings, many adorned with heraldic emblems and intricate carvings.
It is about 5-6 meters wide and maintains much of its original medieval layout and structures.
The buildings along the street include the Inns of the Tongues, large hostels or “auberges” originally providing residence to the different national or linguistic groups (“Tongues”) within the Order: France, Italy, Provence, Auvergne, Aragon, England, and Germany.
Notable Sites on the Street

Palace of the Grand Master: The street culminates at this imposing palace, the former administrative center of the Knights. Today, it serves as a museum showcasing local and medieval history.
Hospital of the Knights: This 15th-century hospital stands at the beginning of the street and now houses the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes.
Medieval Clock Tower: This landmark, used historically as a watchtower and timekeeping device, adds to the architectural splendor of the area.
Guild Houses: These structures along the street reflect the trades and professions prominent in medieval Rhodes.
Modern Atmosphere
Today, the Street of the Knights is a vibrant destination, drawing tourists who come to admire its architecture, historical significance, and unique atmosphere.

The street now hosts museums, embassies, consular offices, restaurants, cafes, art galleries, shops, and hosts occasional cultural events.
Despite modernisation and reconstruction, especially by Italian authorities in the 20th century, much of its medieval character remains intact, although some critique exists of the restoration for its historical inaccuracy.
Significance

The street stands as one of the finest testimonies of Gothic urbanism in Europe and a symbol of Rhodes’ time as a crossroad of civilizations.
Visitors often remark on the evocative “time-travel” feeling while walking down the street, with its rich blend of history, architecture, and legend.
